This month's Expression

I ended up ~ing 결국 ~하게 됐어요

원래 계획했던 것과 다른 결과가 생겼을 때, 또는 예상치 못한 방향으로 일이 마무리되었을 때 사용하는 패턴입니다. 뒤에는 반드시 동사의 ~ing 형태(동명사)가 옵니다. 좋은 결과에도, 예상치 못한 결과에도 모두 쓸 수 있는 표현입니다.

Small Talk

남자: How was the cooking class you signed up for?
신청한 요리 수업은 어땠어?

여자: Well, the class got cancelled at the last minute, so I ended up cooking at home by myself.
그게, 수업이 갑자기 취소돼서 결국 혼자 집에서 요리하게 됐어.

남자: Oh no! What did you make?
아이고! 뭘 만들었어?

여자: I tried to make pasta, but I ended up burning it. So I just ordered delivery.
파스타를 만들려고 했는데 결국 태워 버렸어. 그래서 그냥 배달시켰지.

남자: Ha! Sounds like you need that cooking class more than ever.
하하! 그 요리 수업이 더욱 필요한 것 같은데.


여자: I thought you were going hiking this morning. What happened?
오늘 아침에 등산 가는 줄 알았는데. 어떻게 된 거야?

남자: The weather looked bad, so I ended up staying home and watching a documentary instead.
날씨가 안 좋아 보여서 결국 집에 있으면서 다큐멘터리를 봤어.

여자: Oh, that’s too bad. Was the documentary at least interesting?
아, 아쉽다. 다큐멘터리는 그래도 재밌었어?

남자: Actually, yes! It was about traditional Korean spiritual culture. I ended up watching three episodes in a row.
사실은 그래! 한국 전통 정신문화에 관한 거였는데, 결국 세 편을 연달아 보게 됐어.

여자: That sounds like a great day after all!
