[세계속의증산도]
인도땅에 뿌리내려가는 진리의 씨앗

힌두교의 나라 인도에 상제님 진리의 꽃을 피우기 위한 본격적인 행보가 시작되었다. 지난 4월 26일, 증산도가 인도에서 법인단체로 정식 등록된 것은 물론, 인도의 수도 뉴델리와 남부의 케랄라에서 세 차례에 걸쳐 열린 강연회로 인도인들도 이제 한국 땅에서 태동한 참하나님의 진리인 증산도와 개벽에 대해 크게 한 소식을 듣게 된 것이다.
그 활기찬 활동을 이끌어낸 주인공은 바로 인도인 디네시 왈슨 성도. 그는 지난해 증산도에 입도한 후 인도로 돌아가 현지 지인들과 시민들을 대상으로 그룹 세미나, 공공기관 책기증, 언론홍보 등의 눈부신 활약으로 증산도를 널리 알린 바 있다. 그런 그가 이번에는 본부 국제부 지원 아래 강연회를 통해 한층 규모있는 행사를 치러냈다.
일당백의 포부와 열정으로 무장하고서도, 다만 기회를 주신 상제님께 감사드릴 뿐이라며 늘 개척자의 정신을 잃지 않는 그의 모습에서 인도인들의 밝은 미래를 예견하며 현지소식을 들어본다.
This past April proved the most important month of my life because of some very special events. In April, I took the first steps in fulfilling my ambition of bringing more and more people into Jeung San Do. The Jeung San Do International Department in Taejeon, South Korea, supported me in this ambition far beyond my expectations. Sabunim himself demonstrated his special interest in my work, and his encouragement filled me with such energy and hope that I cannot express my obligation to him in words.
아주 특별한 이벤트가 있었던 지난 4월은 제 인생에 있어서 가장 중요한 달이었습니다. 왜냐하면 보다 더 많은 사람들에게 증산도를 전하리라는 제 열망의 멋진 첫 걸음을 내디딜 수 있었기 때문입니다. 또한 대한민국 태전의 증산도 국제부로부터 기대에 넘치는 큰 도움도 받을 수가 있었습니다. 사부님께서는 이번 일에 특히 큰 관심을 보여주셨는데, 큰 기운과 희망을 불어 넣어주신 격려의 말씀을 비롯하여 형언할 수 없는 은혜를 받았습니다.
I began my work of pogyo (?onveying the teachings? in Delhi, sharing the teachings with my friends, neighbors, and relatives. It is never easy convincing people to listen if they already possess deeply set religious beliefs, but I found that after I spoke with my audiences two or three times, I could identify people with an earnest interest in Jeung San Do. I concentrated my efforts on convincing this group.
저는 인도에 돌아온 뒤 친구들과 이웃들, 그리고 친척들을 중심으로 델리에서 포교활동을 시작했습니다. 이미 기존 종교에 깊게 빠져있는 사람들에게 진리를 전한다는 것이 결코 쉬운 일은 아니었지만 두 세 차례의 도담을 통해 증산도에 관심 있는 사람들을 찾아낼 수가 있었습니다. 이들에게 진리의 확신을 심어주기 위해서 저는 최대한의 노력을 쏟아 부었습니다.
I was very pleased at the arrival of books from Korea, and I found that distributing these copies of Gaebyeok Magazine and The Dance of the Dragon and Phoenix and sharing my own knowledge and modest experiences with Jeung San Do helped to smooth the pogyo process. Most of my talks focused on gaebyeok and cosmology, but for my audience, the lack of literature in their native tongue was a major problem.
한국으로부터 도착한 책들은 참으로 반가웠습니다. 사람들에게 나누어 준 <개벽 매거진>과 <용봉의 춤>, 그리고 그동안 축적된 지식과 경험은 자연스런 진리전개에 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그런데 개벽과 우주관을 중심으로 도담을 이끌어 나가긴 했지만, 그들의 모국어로 된 자료가 없다는 것이 큰 문제였습니다.
The story of Monk Jinpyo was a frequent feature of my talks on Sangjenim, and I found it striking how strongly the story of Monk Jinpyo interested my listeners. Seeing this, I gave many similar illustrations to my audiences to ease their understanding of matters such as cosmology and gaebyeok. For example, I spoke about the world's reoccurring wars and the rise of women in society.
상제관을 이야기할 때는 주로 진표율사의 일화를 들려주곤 했는데, 신기하게도 사람들이 큰 관심을 보이는 것을 발견하였습니다. 이를 계기로 우주관과 개벽에 대한 얘기를 할 때에도 이해하기 쉬운 여러 가지 일화들을 섞어서 설명을 해주게 되었습니다. 예를 들어, 끝없는 전쟁과 최근 급상승하는 여성인권에 대한 얘기 등을 인용합니다.
The International Department sent two representatives to India to conduct seminars and evaluate the work that needed to be done: Ahn Jung-gyeom, Director of the International Department, Korea; and Kim Jae Nam, Jeung San Do English Education Director, New York Dojang.
안중겸 국제부 수호사님과 뉴욕도장의 김재남 영어교육 수호사님이 인도에서의 강연회 개최와 행사에 대한 평가를 위해 국제부를 대표하여 오셨습니다.
It was on April 25, 2005, that I met with an advocate and made the necessary legal preparations to register Jeung San Do. On April 26, 2005, Jeung San Do of India became a legal organization. Everyone who worked on this venture in front of or behind the scenes can rejoice and feel proud. It is a great moment in history!!!
2005년 4월 25일, 증산도의 합법적인 승인을 위해 필요한 법적서류를 준비한 다음 변호사를 만났고, 2005년 4월 26일 마침내 인도에서 증산도가 합법 단체로 등록되었습니다. 여러모로 수고했던 모든 사람들에게 한없이 기쁘고 자랑스러운 날이었고, 참으로 역사적인 순간이 아닐 수 없었습니다.
Next, we arranged two seminars in New Delhi, the capital city of the nation, and one in Kerala, the southernmost province of India.
이어 우리는 인도의 수도인 뉴델리에서 두 번, 최남단에 있는 케랄라에서 한 차례의 강연회를 열기로 하였습니다.
Twenty-five people participated in the first seminar, held on April 25, 2005, in New Delhi. Kim Jae Nam conducted the seminar, and the first class was on Sangjenim. Kim Jae Nam performed his role very well, vividly explaining Sangjenim in a way that shed light on the Indian culture and beliefs. I cannot express how effective his extensive video presentation proved (particularly as a complement to a lengthy speech) and how much it thrilled the audience. The audience members remarked, "We will be able to grasp the teachings more easily if there are further video presentations like the one today." At the end of the seminar, everyone chanted the Taeeulju Mantra twenty-one times.
2005년 4월 25일, 김재남 부수호사님의 지도 아래 '상제관'을 주제로 열린 첫 번째 뉴델리 강연회에는 25명의 사람들이 참석했습니다. 부수호사님의 강의는 참으로 대단했습니다. 상제관에 대한 열정적인 강의는 인도 문화와 신앙에 서광을 비추는 것 같았습니다. 다소 길었던 강연회 중에 사용되었던 영상자료 또한 관객들에게 말로 표현하기 힘들 정도로 많은 감동을 주었습니다. 모두들 "오늘 같은 영상 프레젠테이션을 앞으로도 볼 수 있다면 진리를 이해하기가 훨씬 수월할 것이다."라는 한결같은 반응을 보였습니다. 참여했던 모든 사람들과 태을주 21독을 송주하며 강연회를 모두 마쳤습니다.
4월 27일, 뉴델리에서 열린 두 번째 강연회는 우주관을 주제로 하였는데 첫 강연회에 왔던 사람들을 포함해서 24명이 참석했습니다. 두 강연회가 모두 평일에 열렸던 관계로 참석하고 싶어했던 사람들 중에 많은 사람들이 올 수가 없어 정말 안타까웠습니다. 하지만 적어도 이날 강연회에 참석했던 사람들 모두는 우주관을 보다 쉽게 이해할 수 있었고, 이것을 가능하게 해주신 김재남 부수호사님께 정말 감사 드립니다.
The third seminar was held in Kannur City, Kerala, on April 29, 2005. Kerala, because of the geography of the southernmost part of India, is said to be the most beautiful province of India. Malayalam is the mother tongue of the people in this province. Twenty-eight people participated in this seminar, and it commenced with a video presentation on Jeung San Do. Afterward, Kim Jae Nim taught a detailed class about Sangjenim, cosmology, and meditation. Here, too, the class ended with everyone chanting the Taeeulju Mantra twenty-one times.
세 번째 강연회는 4월 29일, 케랄라에 있는 칸누르 시티에서 열렸습니다. 그곳 사람들은 Malayalam어를 사용합니다. 인도의 가장 남쪽에 위치하고 있는 케랄라는 빼어난 지리적 환경으로 인도에서 가장 아름다운 곳으로 알려져 있습니다. 강연회에는 28명의 사람들이 참석했는데, 영상자료 상영을 시작으로 상제관, 우주관 그리고 수행관에 대한 자세한 강의가 이어졌으며, 마찬가지로 태을주 21독과 함께 강연회는 막을 내렸습니다.
In all three of the seminars, people showed great enthusiasm and were anxious to learn more about Jeung San Do and its teachings. I don't think that we have arrived at our destination yet; this is just a beginning. My aim continues to be to swiftly introduce Jeung San Do to more and more people. For this process to move forward, we need copies of Gaebyeok Magazine translated into Hindi and Malayalam as soon as possible.
세 차례의 강연회를 통해 사람들은 증산도와 진리에 대해 더욱더 많은 것을 배우고 싶다는 강한 열망과 호기심을 나타냈습니다. 하지만 이것이 전부는 아닙니다. 목표를 향한 발걸음은 이제부터 시작입니다. 좀더 빠르게, 좀더 많은 사람들에게 증산도를 전하는 것이 저의 목적이며 이것을 달성하기 위해서는 힌두어나 Malayalam어로 된 <개벽 매거진>의 출간이 시급하다고 생각합니다.
My best and most sincere gratitude goes out to the Jeung San Do International Department and our beloved Taesabunim and Sabunim for helping me in countless ways, such as by making arrangements, sharing timely suggestions, and giving advice.
