문둥병자를 새 사람으로 만드심

1 하루는 상제님께서 원평(院坪)을 지나시는데 길가에 한 병자가 있거늘, 온몸이 대풍창(大風瘡)으로 뒤덮여 그 흉한 형상이 차마 보기 어려운 지경이라.

2 그 병자가 상제님의 행차를 보고 달려와서 크게 울며 하소연하기를"제가 이생에 죄를 지은 바가 없는데 이 같은 형벌을 받음은 전생의 죄 때문이옵니까?

3 바라옵건대 전생에 지은 중죄(重罪)를 용서하옵소서. 만일에 죄가 너무 무거워서 용서하실 수 없다면 차라리 죽음을 내려 주옵소서."하고 통곡하며 뒤를 따르니

4 보는 사람들 가운데 눈물을 흘리지 않는 이가 없더라.

5 상제님께서 잠시 애처롭게 바라보시더니 병자를 부르시어"내가 너를 고쳐 주리니 여기 앉으라."하시고

6 성도들로 하여금"길 위에 둥글게 병자를 둘러싸고 앉으라."하신 후에

7 일러 말씀하시기를"'대학지도(大學之道)는 재신민(在新民)이라.'이 구절을 계속하여 외우라."하시니라.

8 이에 성도들이 명을 받들어 외우는데 얼마 지나지 않아"이제 되었으니 그만 읽고 눈을 뜨라."하시거늘

9 모두 눈을 떠 보니 병자가 완전히 새사람이 되어 앉아 있는지라 모두가 크게 놀라니라.

하느님, 하느님이시여!

10 새사람이 된 병자가 기뻐 뛰고 춤추면서"하느님, 하느님이시여! 저의 큰 죄를 용서하시어 저에게 새로운 인생을 열어 주셨습니다."하고 울부짖거늘

11 이 광경을 바라보던 사람들이 모두"만일 하느님의 권능이 아니라면 어찌 이렇게 할 수 있으리오."하고 탄복하니라.

12 상제님께서 병자에게"너는 북쪽으로 십 리를 가라. 거기에 가면 네가 살길이 있으리라." 하시고 그를 보내시니

13 한 성도가 상제님께 여쭈기를"문둥병은 천형(天刑)이라 하여 세상에서는 치료할 방도가 없는 것인데 글을 읽게 하여 그 자리에서 고치게 하시니 어떤 연고입니까?"하매

14 말씀하시기를"나의 도(道)는 천하의 대학(大學)이니 장차 천하창생을 새사람으로 만들것이니라."하시니라. (도전 2:79)

Healing a Leper

1While passing through Wonpyeong Village with His disciples, Sangjenim beheld on the street an ailing man whose body was covered with leprous sores. The man's appearance was so gruesome it was difficult to look at him.

2The leper saw Sangjenim and rushed toward Him, weeping and pleading, "I have committed no wrong in my life, yet I suffer this punishment. Is it so because I have sinned in my previous lives? 3I beg of You, please forgive these sins─or, if they are too grave to be forgiven, then please grant me death."Wailing, the leper trailed along after Sangjenim, 4and there was not a single onlooker who did not shed tears at the sight.

5Sangjenim gazed with sorrow upon the leper for a time, then announced, "I shall heal you. Sit down."6Sangjenim commanded the disciples, "Seat yourselves in a circle around this man, here on the street."7He then continued, "Now chant these words:' The dao of great teaching will renew all people.'"

8The disciples obediently closed their eyes and chanted the words. After a short time, Sangjenim commanded, "That is enough. Now stop and open your eyes."

9The disciples opened their eyes and discovered to their amazement that the leper's body had been completely renewed.

All People Shall Be Renewed

10The healed leper leapt to his feet and danced with joy, crying out," Heavenly Lord! Heavenly Lord! You have forgiven my horrible sins and granted me a new life!"11All those who witnessed the healing cried out in awe, "This could not have happened save by the power of God!"

12"Go north ten ri,"Sangjenim counseled the healed man. "There, you will find a livelihood."

13A disciple inquired of Sangjenim, "Leprosy is known as a punishment from heaven and there is no known cure in this world, yet You had us merely recite a phrase and the leper was healed in an instant. How is such a thing possible?"

14Sangjenim answered, "My dao is the greatest of all teachings─the teaching that shall renew all people."(English Dojeon 2:59)
